First Grade at Sechrist Elementary School

Our first-grade team is dedicated to building a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking while nurturing each child’s curiosity, creativity, and confidence. First grade is a time of tremendous growth, and we’re excited to support your child every step of the way.

What Your First Grader Is Learning

 

Reading & Writing

Read the first 250 high-frequency words

Improve reading fluency and accuracy with grade-level texts

Recognize and apply letter-sound relationships

Answer basic comprehension questions (who, what, when, where)

Use the writing process to draft simple stories

Apply correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure

Math & Science

Count, read, and write numbers up to 120

Add and subtract numbers through 20

Solve basic problems using one and two-digit numbers

Identify coins and count money 

Tell time to the hour

Explore simple experiments, balance and motion, and weather

Engage in basic probability and make predictions based on data

Social Studies

Learn about world cultures and civilizations

Understand traditions, geography, and how people live and work in different communities

Technology, Art, Music & P.E.

Use technology safely and effectively for classroom learning and research

Explore art and music through hands-on activities and historical context

Learn the vocabulary and skills needed to create and perform

Participate in physical education to develop motor skills and promote health and wellness
