First Grade at Sechrist Elementary School

Our first-grade team is dedicated to building a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking while nurturing each child’s curiosity, creativity, and confidence. First grade is a time of tremendous growth, and we’re excited to support your child every step of the way.

What Your First Grader Is Learning

 

Reading & Writing

  • Read the first 100 high-frequency words

  • Improve reading fluency and accuracy with grade-level texts

  • Recognize and apply letter-sound relationships

  • Answer basic comprehension questions (who, what, when, where)

  • Use the writing process to draft simple stories

  • Apply correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure

Math & Science

  • Count, read, and write numbers up to 100

  • Add and subtract numbers through 18

  • Solve basic problems using one- and two-digit numbers

  • Identify coins and count money up to $1.00

  • Tell time to the hour

  • Explore simple experiments, balance and motion, and weather

  • Engage in basic probability and make predictions based on data

Social Studies

  • Learn about world cultures and civilizations, with a focus on Egypt and North America

  • Understand traditions, geography, and how people live and work in different communities

Technology, Art, Music & P.E.

  • Use technology safely and effectively for classroom learning and research

  • Explore art and music through hands-on activities and historical context

  • Learn the vocabulary and skills needed to create and perform

  • Participate in physical education to develop motor skills and promote health and wellness
