Fourth grade is a time for students to deepen their academic skills, explore complex ideas, and grow as independent learners. Our fourth-grade team is committed to guiding students through a dynamic and engaging year of discovery.

What Your Fourth Grader Is Learning

Reading & Writing
Fourth-grade students will:

  • Read fluently with appropriate pacing, rhythm, and expression

  • Determine meanings, pronunciations, syllables, and synonyms

  • Demonstrate comprehension by drawing conclusions, identifying cause and effect, and making inferences

  • Distinguish between fact and opinion

  • Identify types of literature and apply effective writing traits

  • Accurately paraphrase information from research materials

Math & Science
In math, students will:

  • Understand place value and compare unit fractions

  • Solve problems using estimation, measurements, graphs, and charts

  • Verify the reasonableness of answers using estimation

  • Solve basic algebraic equations with a missing variable

In science, students will:

  • Explore properties of electricity, magnetism, and water

  • Investigate ways to conserve resources

  • Formulate questions, make predictions, and conduct investigations

Social Studies
Students will study:

  • Arizona and Southwest history

  • Early civilizations of Central and South America

  • Encounters between Indigenous cultures and European explorers
