Second Grade at Sechrist Elementary School

Welcome to second grade! This is an exciting year where students will
expand their curiosity, deepen their knowledge, build confidence, and
create many sweet memories! Our teachers provide a supportive and
engaging learning environment for students to strengthen reading fluency
and comprehension, math skills, problem solving abilities, all while
exploring different science and social studies topics.

What Your Second Grader Is Learning

Reading & Writing

Read and spell single and multi-syllabic words with the six
different syllable types
Read fluently with accuracy, expression, and comprehension
Explore a variety of reading genres, such as fairy tales,
biographies, and historical texts.
Apply the writing process to plan, draft, and revise paragraphs
in different formats, including opinion, narrative, and
informational
Use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar in written work

Math & Science

Identify and order numbers up to 1,000

Use money and tell time to the minute

Add and subtract three-digit numbers with regrouping

Create and solve word problems

Conduct science investigations and compare results

Measure correctly using a variety of tools

Science

Explore life cycles of insects, mammals, and plants and their
adaptations
Explain the differences in states of matter
Research tectonic plates and how they impact landscapes
Identify patterns in nature

Social Studies

Study the formation of the United States, early exploration, and
westward expansion
Explore ancient civilizations in Asia and Greece
Learn basic map skills, including construction and interpretation
Research important historical figures and how they impacted
society for the better

Technology, Art, Music & P.E.

Technology: Use digital tools safely and effectively for learning, research, and communication

Art & Music:Explore the historical and expressive value of art and music while developing creative skills and vocabulary

Physical Education: Build motor skills, promote teamwork, and encourage healthy lifestyle habits through active play and structured movement
