Second Grade at Sechrist Elementary School

Second grade is a year of expanding skills, deepening curiosity, and building confidence. Our teachers provide a supportive and engaging environment where students strengthen their reading, writing, math, and problem-solving abilities while exploring science, social studies, and the arts.

Reading & Writing

  • Read and spell the first 200 high-frequency words

  • Read fluently with accuracy, expression, and comprehension

  • Recognize and use compound words in context

  • Follow multi-step written directions

  • Apply the writing process to plan, draft, and revise

  • Use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar in written work

Math & Science

  • Identify and order numbers up to 1,000

  • Understand place value and basic operations

  • Use money and tell time to the minute

  • Add three-digit numbers and begin multiplication (1s, 2s, 5s, 10s)

  • Create and solve word problems

  • Conduct science investigations and compare results

  • Explore life cycles of insects, mammals, and plants

  • Measure and record weather conditions

Social Studies

  • Study the formation of the United States, early exploration, and westward expansion

  • Explore ancient and modern civilizations in Asia

  • Learn basic map skills, including construction and interpretation

Technology, Art, Music & P.E.

  • Technology: Use digital tools safely and effectively for learning, research, and communication

  • Art & Music: Explore the historical and expressive value of art and music while developing creative skills and vocabulary

  • Physical Education: Build motor skills, promote teamwork, and encourage healthy lifestyle habits through active play and structured movement
